I have a peculiar situation with an international seller. The item was not hallmarked but the seller said it was sterling. Upon arrival I tested it with JSP silver acid. I actually have 2 different bottles only 1 month or so apart between them, both recently ordered that give faithful results on "known silver". On the item in question it turned red then blue. I tested the area again, bright blue. Again Bright blue. This led me to believe it's silver plate. I never got red after the first initial small smidgeon of red that went away. I like to test the same spot to confirm if its silver or plate... and it only got bluer faster. The seller, although she was kind and issued a return/ refund, insisted it's silver and my results are wrong. She uses a different type of testing acid. I dont know the brand she used but it is something with a labeled amber cap for testing silver. It says its nitric acid above 14.5% and chromium oxide below 12.2%. It notes that if the item is silver it will turn bright red, amber for not silver. she sent me a picture in which the item appears "silver" under her test, though admittedly she did not test the exact same area twice. So... is there any circumstance at all in which something that's sterling silver will yield blue results with JSP acid solution??? I have no problem getting proper results on known silver with the same bottle but I'm so confused. The reason I'm questioning is I liked the item, I did want to keep it but not for the price I paid if its not silver plate. I want to make sure I am not missing anything for my testing in the future with purchases. Thank you in advance. IP: Logged |
