I thought I would share this interesting Tiffany England cast conch shell. About 5 inches long and 305 grams. Marked with traditional English hallmarks, T&Co., London, Sterling, and date mark 1959. Also with Tiffany &Co., Sterling, England. I have owned this in my collection for about 20 years and have only seen one other at the Miami Beach show a few years ago. Realistically cast. I think this may have been used as a salt cellar or perhaps for caviar.

Nice piece. It looks like the inside is vermeiled which would support your theory of salt cellar. Would love to see the salt spoon that would have gone with it. IP: Logged |

Thank you June. I had not thought about the spoon that would have gone with this, and knowing Tiffany, I am sure there would have been one. Now, I will be on the hunt for the matching Tiffany spoon. Regards, Ken IP: Logged |

Beautiful piece from Tiffany. I wonder if any other US companies manufactured silver in England. IP: Logged |

Gorham registered a sponsor's (maker's) mark in London and Birmingham but it is not clear whether they actually manufactured silver here in the UK or merely used local manufacturing silversmiths. The same proviso applies to Tiffany, whose mark was registered in London, Birmingham and Sheffield. Phil IP: Logged |

Thanks for that information PhilO. It has always seemed to me that the US silver industry was a lot more aggressive in marketing than the US ceramics or pottery industry. The United Kingdom's pottery industry still has an edge in many areas. Early on (1840s) I think a silver tariff on UK silver helped the silver industry get started. PhilO - Gorham manufactured silver items in the UK at their factory in Birmingham from 1909 to 1921. Ian IP: Logged |

Phil provides some great information - thanks! My understand has always been that since WW 2, Tiffany both in the US and especially the UK actually manufactures very little of what it sells. They seem to be more of a retailing operation with contracts with various makers who manufacture objects under Tiffany designs. And I completely agree with June that this beautiful shell is most likely a salt cellar, though of course one can use anything for whatever they like. My thought is that in addition to the gilt interior it being a SEA shell conjures the image of it coming from the SALTY OCEAN hence being a salt cellar is a clever concatenation for it. IP: Logged |

Kimo, Tiffany continued to make most of their silver pieces until the mid 1980s. The quality of the craftsmanship was still very high, but then the company started to change hands and things began to go downhill. There was no longer any connection to the Tiffany family. Dies weren't being replaced. Work began to be shifted out of the country. The marketing strategy changed and we are where we are today. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Richard. Maybe I was just looking at the overall quality compared to what they were producing in the early days. IP: Logged |
