Hi All, another mystery mark on this sterling & lapis 4 1/4" hinged & latched case/box.
I’ve done lots of research trying to determine provenance with no success.
Initially I thought Native American / Southwestern / Pueblo – no foreign hallmarks & it has a NA vibe, to my eye at least - sun rays & Kiva steps…
Likely I’m completely off-base…hoping for some thoughts & thanks for looking smile

Wonderful job on the photo posts, NancyJ. Would you tell us a bit about your particular interest in silver?

HI June,
I've been collecting all types of vintage and antique jewelry for many years, silver, costume, some gold...
I'm a little all over the place as far as what I collect, Chinese, Mexican, Scandinavian, modernist, some contemporary. I love quirky off-beat pieces.
So I know a little about a lot smile Part hobby, part obsession! Love going to antique flea markets, try to make it to Brimfield in spring and fall. Have made many great like-minded friends over the years.
Very much looking forward to participating in this forum!!
Nancy

It is hard to say and I do not recognize the markings. My first impression of the style of the box though is Mexican rather than American Indian. There have been so many hundreds (thousands) of small Mexican silver smiths over the decades and my references only include the best known and most famous ones. It could be some other country of course. Also, my impression is that it may not have a great deal of age to it (though it does not look like it was made recently) gauging from the wear pattern, though again this is very hard to say for sure.

I do not know who the mark belongs to, but your ideas certainly would be a good guess as to where the artist comes from. Their initials may be MV and I wonder why the letters are not located evenly. The separate mark seems to indicate that they made a lot of hollow ware.
I think of articles like this as by a silversmith that is making more one of a kind items and considers their self an artist.

Thank you Kimo & ahwt for your thoughts smile
Mexico never occurred to me since there is not MEXICO mark of any kind, but I suppose it's possible.
Yes, I noticed how the initials were placed somewhat randomly beneath the tree mark.
If I learn anything I'll post, thanks again for everyone's comments!
