Hi I am new to the forum obviously as im in the new members section. A freind gave me a few items they have had for a while as they know i enjoy finding items of vintage intrest. Saving some from a "early" demise. This item has a stamp but i wanted to know more and hadn't been able to find out more yet so I came here. As you can see the stamp is a bit light so I could be wrong on the symbol. I've looked pretty carefully but I don't see any other marks on it. I did take a crack at drawing the symbol that it could be:

La Pierre Manufacturing Company of Newark, New Jersey. They were bought out by International Silver Company in 1929, though IS often continued to use markings of companies that it bought for a while so it could be later than 1929. My guess is between the 1910s and 1940s given the overall style.

Thank you so much for your response. I wondered if that was indeed the company. I was concerned that once I saw the La Pierre stamp I was trying to make this stamp fit that shape. I love it I think its quite adorable. I had been thinking it might be plate but given that its mot magnetic and it really doesn't look plated any ideas on what's typical for these mirrors? this is out of my wheel house I typically find old rusty tools and contraptions, followed by primitive wood furniture.

These mirrors are a part of larger vanity sets that typically have 6 to 12 pieces to them. Your mirror should have a number of items in the same pattern including at least a hair brush, a clothes brush, a comb, a nail buffer, a button hook, and a series of lidded jars. They generally came in three levels of fanciness to fit the budgets of every women from silver plated ones, to solid silver ones (like yours) for women who had a little money and ones that are solid silver with transparent colored enamel (melted glass in colors such as blue, green, rose, yellow, etc.) for women who insisted on the best. And even within these general levels there were differences in quality among the various makers and retailers with the bigger name makers and jewelers being the nicer quality. It would be great if you could find the rest of the set in this pattern, but even if you have just this mirror it is a nice thing to keep on your vanity and use when you are primping. You should go ahead an polish the silver but be sure to only use silver polish paste rubbed on by hand with a clean cotton cloth, and do not use a dip or a power tool buffer as those can ruin the patina of the silver.

Oh wow I had assumed maybe a hair bush and maybe one other item would have made the set, but it was a different time.... no chance of finding the rest of the set it was the only item I had access to. thanks for the polishing tip! When looking at it closely the other day I saw what looked like paint in the fine engraving, then i realized no that likely some sort of base/face powder still in the engraving. i thought that was a little glimpse into the past.

thanks again to you for both

Some of the following might be found in a vanity set.

My favorites are the ones with the transparent colored enameling over the sterling silver. And the most proper ladies would have a second set in a traveling case so they would always have their necessaries with them.
