![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Hello fellow silver lovers. As a young avid treasure hunter I am happy to have finally found this forum, and looking forward to learning all I can! Can you solve my mermaid tray mystery?About 5 years ago or so I purchased this piece from a antique store in NYC. I have always had fun treasure hunting and this struck me as a treasure right away. At the time I didn’t even realize it was silver until about 6 months later when I Noticed the small hallmarks. Since then It’s been a journey to try and figure this out and I still basically know nothing about it. I have searched all over the internet and through silver mark books and I cannot find these marks to save my life. The most certain is the 900 mark stamped in an oval. Right next to it in another oval is what I assume would be the makers initials, which I see to be either a MS or MC (it’s very small and hard to tell I could see it both ways). It’s been a while since I have been down the rabbit hole but I know 900 is not a fairly common mark nor is the oval that it’s in. If I remember correctly I think I came to the conclusion it may be American as opposed to European or Russian due to the 900 stamp. In the mermaids hand and in one of the clams there is what I believe to be a real natural pearl. I’m not sure what could have happened to her face, this is the condition that I found it, but I assume she used to have a pretty face, when looking at the reverse side you can almost see the face she used to have. Figuring out where this came from/ how old it is / and who could have made it is something I have been curious about for so long. She’s the best part of my treasure collection and I would love to learn something about it. Thank you for taking a look! If nobody here has an idea I’m not sure where I would go from here. The mermaid tray weighs 1pound 1.5oz and measures 12inch x 9inch. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Yes, the 900 marking is a US silver marking, but it is also a common marking used by 12 other countries so by itself it does not say much as to where your tray was made. 900 says it is an alloy of 900 parts silver and 100 parts other metals such as nickel, tin, copper, etc. By contrast, Sterling silver is a higher purity silver made with 925 parts silver with 75 parts other metals. The MS as you suggest is likely the maker but I do not know who it would be. However, it could also be the retailer. As for the face and overall quality, I am not sure I would consider this a high quality tray, as even if it is worn down it is still a bit on the less than high quality side in my personal opinion. As for its age, I do not know and it could be any time from the Art Nouveau period that it is trying to be, to something produced somewhat recently, or anywhen in between. IP: Logged |
