Here is another major maker of stainless flatware, Cambridge Silversmiths located in Fairfield NJ. The firm is less than 20 years old per the introduction at their website.

I think the above explains the current situation in making and selling tableware very clearly. The question remains how did a brand new company move in on the established firms and take over the popular priced market?

Cambridge provides attractive, well made flatware in a variety of styles and a range of prices. The online shop currently list 261 distinct products.

Dale,

I wonder why a company that has made only stainless items from the start would call itself Cambridge Silversmiths. Where is the silver?
If a company making sewing machines called itself General Motors, wouldn't one wonder what they were up to?

Good question Tom. I have no idea of why they use the name 'silversmith'. But they do, and it seems more a marketing device than anything else. Perhaps it has to do with the other firms that also include the term, like Lunt.

Here's another company in the stainless flatware business, Yamazaki.

They sell through Bed, Bath & Beyond, Macy's, and also via some high-end gift stores in my area. They offer a sample spoon program -- teaspoons from up to three patterns at a low price.

Although they're the makers of the Gone Fishin' design shown in a much earlier thread on new trends in stainless, they seem in general to be positioning themselves as high-quality rather than whimsical.
