I believe that this tool was used as a cabbage cutter and chopper. The left side of the tool has a curved blade that was used to pull though cabbages to cut them at their base while the right side had a sharpened hatchet like form used to chop up the cabbages. The shank of the tool extends through the wooden handle and is bent over to secure the blades in the handle. My first reaction on seeing this tool was the delightful bird that resulted from the tool maker’s hand. I only recognized its use after feeling the sharpened edges and by that time I was already taken with its enchanting shape. I would like to find more items made by F. Messina, but have been unable to locate any information about him. Does anyone have information about this maker. IP: Logged |
