The same dealer that had the horn handled knives had this object that they called a candle holder. I do not know what it started out as, but we are going to use it as a country wine bottle coaster at a fall dinner party. This has been a hot and humid summer so far so I am thinking fall. I think the construction of this piece is interesting. The metal smith appears to have rolled the edges over on both sides of a long strip of metal and then rolled the strip and attached the ends to form a circle. Rivets were used to attach a separate bottom plate to the piece and the top edges were crimped somehow to fashion a pleasing design. I think all of the construction must have been done when the metal was hot and pliable. IP: Logged |

Good idea. I like the look. What are the dimensions? IP: Logged |

It is 1 1/2" high, the inside is 3 5/8" wide while the outside is 4 5/8" wide. Just the right side to hold a bottle of wine. IP: Logged |

I was going to think about what else but the size makes it perfect for a wine coaster. I really like the look. A little cork/felt on the bottom will keep the rivets from scratching the table. IP: Logged |

With apologies to Matthew Boulton (on the right) and the maker of an unmarked Old Sheffield Plate wine coaster (on the left) the metal coaster seems to me to do quite well for the purpose of holding a bottle of wine. Scott I think your idea of padding the rivets is a good one and I will do that.
