I started looking for water dippers after I attended an exhibit of them at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, Georgia many years ago. Their exhibit was limited to dippers that were at least partially made from silver. These dippers were all based on earlier ones that were made from coconut shells; so the bowl had the shape of a coconut shell.
The latest one I found is has a pewter bowl with a wooden handle. This one does not have a coconut shaped bowl, but I think it may of been used as a water dipper as it has an attractive cloth loop for hanging. There seem to be general consensus that dippers were hung by some water source and that use was communal.
The other one I found in central Missouri a couple of years ago is made from a very long gourd. Gourds of all shapes often have a bowl shaped portion and must be easy to hollow out.
