Typically such numbers are manufacturer's stock numbers to help them identify a particular object and style in their inventory. Large manufacturers will have hundreds if not thousands of style variations over the life of their making things and it is simpler for them and their retailers to refer to a particular type of object made in a particular size and in a particular style by a stock number rather than a long descriptive name that will invariably create some confusion.
