Hi all, As many of you know, John R. McGrew, PhD, has been working on collecting and identifying 3 and 4 part psuedo hall marks for 20+ years. He has finally published this valuable work, 176 pgs + a 28 page preface in an 8 1/2" x 11" soft cover format.. The photographs are his own, and are well done and for the most part appear on the same page as the relevant information. The preface contains "how to use" guide + a photo index. Dr. McGrew has taken 500 psuedo hallmarks and organized them in an easy to use, orderly format; by the first letter (if they have one) and then , if there are no letters the marks are organized by item, such as "Anchor", "Arm & Hammer", "Star" (5, 6, 8, 8+ points) etc. The best thing is he has identified the manufacturers that produced the psuedo hallmarks. This is a must have book for anyone collecting or dealing with American coin silver. Phone # 717-632-6244 Cost is: $44.00 delivered priority mail or in the state of PA. $46.64 delivered. (Pleaase make check payable to the author, John R. McGrew. IP: Logged |

Thanks, cbc58. I just ordered it. The woman I spoke to, whom I presume (without any actual evidence) to be Mrs. McGrew, told me that they'd printed an edition of 1000 copies, are down to 100-some, and don't have plans to reprint. So anyone who wants this book should probably order it soonish. She also said Dr. McGrew is working on a book about the Basket of Flowers pattern and has identified I think she said 300 dies. I'm looking forward to that book too. She was a bit vague about when he expected it to be ready, but it sounded like it might be in the next year or two. IP: Logged |

She asked me for $46.70, which I believe was $40 for the book and $6.70 for postage, but told me the postage was going up next week, but she didn't know how much it was going up by, and if my check arrived after the postage rise she would absorb it. So if you're planning to buy it soon, you should call again to get an updated amount. I expect it will be in the $48 range. I meant to include an extra couple of dollars for the new postage, but when I wrote out my check I forgot to add them. IP: Logged |

My book arrived today. It's terrific! Now I have to dig out all my coin silver mysteries and see how many it solves. I have a butter knife I've been wondering about for YEARS... Dr. McGrew included a note saying his Basket of Flowers opus is still in its preliminary stages, despite his having identified more than 100 (not 300, as I misremembered) dies. So it's something to look forward to, not something arriving imminently. IP: Logged |
