[01-1043] Silver of German origin seems to be among the more difficult to find good references for. Except for Augsburg silver, it's difficult to find good sources that give accurate dates. I've attached a mark on a silver creamer that I believe is ca. 1810-20 Hamburg (the date letter is an E). Perhaps starting a database of real photo marks would be of value? IP: Logged |

I like the idea. But before we implement such a thing I feel we need to gather the materials (marks & ID's) first. So why doesn't everyone who would like to support this project post the marks in the Forums. And when there is a reasonable quantity of marks/info, I will consolidate all into an organized web page(s). IP: Logged |

This sounds like an interesting idea. What time frame did you have in mind for the marks? IP: Logged |

quote: Paul, I kind of think what gets posted will dictate the time frame of the marks. As to how soon, that will depend on when there have been enough contributions (posts of marks) to organize. I am sure you have a lot of marks. I look forward to your posts. IP: Logged |

Having said that, I presume we are talking about German solid silver items not shown in Seling, Rosenburg, etc., 19th century or earlier. I also presume we have to include pietures of both the piece and the mark. I also presume that a lot of other non-German pieces are going to be included (who can tell the difference?). I have tons of unknown European marks that I classify as German or Eastern European. I guess this would exclude Russian or other marks that are marked 84, etc. Do we remove marks (after they are posted) that are Hongarian, Autro-Hongarian, Italian, Dutch, Scandanavian, etc. My point is I would love to see a database, but someone has to make some kind of rules. Yes? No? Maybe? Maurice [This message has been edited by labarbedor (edited 04-18-2003).] IP: Logged |

WMF? Why bother? The marks are "shown in" Rainwater. IP: Logged |

"... include pictures of both the piece and the mark?" I think both could be interesting and helpful. "I also presume that a lot of other non-German pieces are going to be included (who can tell the difference?)." "Do we remove marks (after they are posted) that are Hungarian Austro-Hungarian, Italian, Dutch, Scandinavian?" "but someone has to make some kind of rules Yes? No? Maybe?" As it regards the proposed database(s). Time will tell if there is enough interest and support (posts) to consolidate & organize into a database. Once we see what kind of participation (posts) there is, we can develop a set of guidelines on an as needed basis. Everyone's suggestions are appreciated. Lets get started and see where this takes us. IP: Logged |

Everyone, Thanks to:
Maurice has gotten the ball rolling with a post of multiple items. See: My first suggestion is that each of these items be a single post. This way each can be discussed separately. What does everyone else think? Once there are a few more posters of marks, I think it would be good to create a new forum just for this project. It will be easy to move these preliminary posts to the new forum. IP: Logged |

Continental Silver might be a good title. IP: Logged |

i second the vote for Continental Silver;it is too difficult to recognize the difference between some countries. Also I now recognize the obvious problem with listing more that one or two items together, the loading time is excessive. Could someone break up my postings into smaller groups? IP: Logged |

The Arnoldsche Verlag (= publisher)in Stutgart (Germany) is preparing a reference on Geman hallmarks. So why now starting a project that in the end is going to be a waste of time. Janjaap Luijt www.silverresearch.org IP: Logged |
