I think these may be continental hallmarks on spoons that appear to be modern remakes of an old pattern. The "flower" mark shows clearly, but the other does not - it is supposed to be some type of bird (sorry, I don't have these spoons in hand). Can anyone identify these? TIA!

I can't make out the photo very well but the right hand mark looks like Austria Hungary guarantee mark. Maurice IP: Logged |

Thanks, larbarbedor! I have a follow up question, if I may. I now have the spoons in hand, but unfortunately can't produce any clearer picture of the marks. The dark one is an oval with something very detailed inside that I just can't make out, even with a 15x loupe. The clearer one is a five-petaled flower border with a woman's head inside facing right (you can just make this out in the above photo). My question is, what is the likely age of these spoons? They are definitely hand made, apparently coin or sterling silver, 14.5 cm long (about 5 3/4 inches), and in Hanoverian pattern with a long center ridge and without any drop. The bowl tips are very thick. I bought these because they were inexpensive, and my wife has been pestering me to use some of the collectible spoons I've acquired. I don't want to endanger or put wear on my 200 to 300 year old collectible spoons, and so I got these, figuring that they are more modern re-makes. I just want to verify that they are indeed re-makes, and not original Hanoverian era spoons. Thanks in advance for any info!!! The mark with the head and "3" at the nape of her neck looks as though it is the Austrian mark for 800 standard used from May 1886 to April 1922. IP: Logged |

Thank you, ozfred! It appears that I can go ahead and let my better half use these for the morning coffee swirl, while I keep my Hanoverian and Old English pattern spoons tucked safely away. Life is good! Rick IP: Logged |
