Hi there,
What I would like to know is 1. Am I using the books improperly ? 2. What other reference books should I have on French silver? 3. What city and when was this cup made? Thanks as always Marc

From your photos I can't make out all the marks. The P mark should have an 89 above the P and below the crown incised. It is the Paris mark for 1789 it is in Tardy the page depends on the language and edition. The maker's mark follows the rules for Paris silversmiths but I don't off hand know the maker. As of yet there is not a book for pre 1798 marks, except some long out of print. Most good books on French silver are in French, and expensive. Unless you are under 30 (and I know you are not) it is a little like someone my age starting to collect Bordeaux wine. By the it is ready to drink, I'll be too old (or dead) to enjoy it. French marks are by far the hardest to understand, kind of like the French language, even if you are born there you will never learn it all. Maurice IP: Logged |
