Greetings! Could some knowlegeable person enlighten me to the history and useage of the heart shaped containers, topped with a gilded crown, that originated in Scandinavia in the late 18th century. Other than, probably, being called a "hovedvansaeg" I can find no published illustrations or description of these, some suggested purposes being an etui, a needle holder, a spice box or a viniagrette. One currently listed on Ebay 2567888856 ending 5/11, has the description - "Beautiful and very fine antique smelling-box for ladies made out of at fine quality of silver and with the shape of a heart. This type of lady smelling-boxes was often used as a engagement present from the young lover. Engraved with rococo ornamentation and initials of the owner. Inside of the smelling-box there is a fine gilding. The smelling-box is decorated with a crown and is made out of sterling sliver by a well-known Danish goldsmith JENS KJELDSEN SOMMERFELDT (lived from 1692 - 1772) from the old Danish city Aalborg. Age: About 1750. High: 2,6 inch. ( 6,5 cm.)." Another example, 65x40x10mm, weighing 26.2g, is fully marked, made by P M Blytt of Bergen and assayed with the zodiac sign between 22 July - 21 August 1796 by Matthais Petersen. Another, 73x50x20mm, weighing 53g, has a maker's mark of "HIE" but no other clues. And another, 70x45x20mm, weighing 31.4g, has pinpricked initials and dated 1841, by "PW" or "PVV" and free standing on a base, similar to illustration AFB 181, page 79 of BWG Wttewaall "Nederlands Klein Zilver en Schepwerk." I believe but am not certain that Silver Magazine published a multi-part article on this subject somewhere around 1990. Let me go see if I can dig out the specific number. IP: Logged |

Jan/Feb 1990 contained part I and Mar/Apr 1990 contained part II of an article on this subject. Unfortunately I don't have the articles on hand or remember anything about them, other than that I think the pieces were said to be vinaigrettes. Perhaps somebody else can enlighten us. According to the Silver Magazine article, these Danish objects were made and/or used between 1730 - 1870. the heart shape ones were only one of five forms, all originally used for holding fragrences of various sorts, the interiors being gilded and compartmented (one for a sponge to hold the fragrance) as were the familiar vinaigrettes elsewhere. The article is profusely illustrated, the second part containing the heart-shaped examples. IP: Logged |
