Here is a puzzler. This is a very stylish serving basket, about 18 inches long and quite attractive. It bears the attached marks on the outside of the footrim. We suspect it to be silverplate, but there is no wear through and no conclusive evidence either way. Does anyone have a clue as to the origin of this piece? Thanks! Brent IP: Logged |

Could the mark on the right be the pentagram used in Spain for silver? Spanish maker's marks are, apparently, often in a hexagon. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Patrick! You are right, the mark on the right could be the Spanish standard mark. I had not heard that about Spanish maker's marks being in hexagons, and I can't recall ever handling 20th C Spanish silver before. Still, the evidence does point to it being Spanish. Thanks again! The urn type mark was used by M. Espunes of Madrid. Refer page 262 of A. Fernandez, R Munoa, J Rabasco "Marcas de la Plata", ISBN 84-86508-28-2. If I recall the firm still operates just outside of Madrid. IP: Logged |

The hallmark in the oval shape of a star is definately for Spain after 1934. ------------------ IP: Logged |
