Hello All, I have a nice set of german silver flatware. The pieces have the half moon, the crown, the word "wenz" and the 800 mark. I presume this is 800 silver and I don't need to test it? I bought it as "stainless"!!! $200 for 90 pieces including a punch ladle and other servers. The satin lined box says Friedrich Wenz Pforzheim, any info on this maker? One more question, a WMF mark with a 90 mark or a 20 mark is silverplate? Also, 90 gravuris is silverplatge as well? thanks in advance IP: Logged |

A "Moon/Crescent/800" set of marks is pretty conclusive for solid .800 silver; faking it would be possible but appears to be rare. "Friedrich Wenz Pforzheim" is a long established mail order house (today on the web). I doubt that it is the actual maker of your set. The number '90' on flatware from Germany and some neighbouring countries indicates a standard quality plating. A '20' is probably a similar quality from early in the 20th C. IP: Logged |
