This unusual coffeepot I've acquired was apparently made in Nuremberg, Germany in the early 19th century. The form is certainly eye-catching, if not exactly what I'd call lovely. Equally bizarre are the busty female sphinxes embossed in panels on the body. The handle is carved from a single piece of fruitwood; the finial is an unusual reeded ball; the body is handraised, not made of sheet silver. I'd guess it dates to 1810-1820. Overall, an interesting melding of French Empire with German/Austrian Biedermeier elements. The base bears three hallmarks: the N for Nuremberg, a rampant lion (probably a maker's mark) and a date letter, apparently a lowercase Gothic "P." I don't have any reference that can enlighten me on Nuremberg date letters (although my books say they were used between the 18th and mid-19th centuries); is anyone out there better informed? The coffeepot is about 9 1/2 inches high to the top of the handle and weighs 18 oz.

These marks are shown together in Rosenberg (Nr. 4314 & 4315, as is the maker's mark alone (Nr. 4313). Unfortunately, the maker is unidentified and the items undated; they are, however, at the end of the list, which puts them squarely in the 19th Century. One of the items with both marks has "Empire-Ornamenten." There were 8 objects catalogued(six with the two marks); six were exhibited and/or published in 1883 and 1885, and two were housed in the New Palace in Darmstadt. The upper mark in your photo is the maker's mark, rotated clockwise about 45 degrees. In the drawings the mark appears to be a script G (with the loop open on the right side)superimiposed over an H. There is no explanatin for the presence of the lion. Someone with a later and more comprehensive Nuremberg reference has contributed in the past; perhaps they can find it. IP: Logged |

Stuart, thank you - I must have an earlier edition of Rosenberg, since mine doesn't include the marks you reference. My edition does say that Nuremberg started using date letters in circular cartouches starting in 1766 and continuing through the 19th c, which is why I thought the upper mark was one of these. In any case, though, I think the sphinxes date it pretty narrowly on stylistic grounds, and the construction shows that it is not a later revival. IP: Logged |
