Hi, I would appreciate any assistance in identifying the maker of what appears to be an antique malachite cigarette case, inset with an authentic Osmanie medal (issued by the Ottoman Empire until 1922), from the estate of World War 1 German Colonel Hermann von Greve-Dierfeld, Commander 201st Field Artillery Regiment, and bearing the hallmarks "800" as well as what appears to be "215FI". A knowledgeable source has told me the "800" mark is Italian, but post-1938. Does anyone know what the "215FI" denotes? Unfortunately, International Hallmarks on Silver Collected by Tardy, suggested as a source to check is not part of the Library of Congress collection here in Washington, D.C. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

My first thought is that FI is for Firenze, the Italian version of Florence. IP: Logged |

The shape of the cartouche containing "215FI" means it was made in Italy. That shape of mark was introduced in a 1934 law that went into effect in 1935. For the next three years, items that were produced prior to 1935, but that were still for sale, had to be marked with a mark containing a star. Newly made items had to be marked with the silver fineness, the supplier's mark (containing an ID number followed by an abbreviation for location--probably Florence, as Patrick observed), and sometimes an assay mark. So, your piece is Italian, 1935 or after. IP: Logged |

Thank you one and all for your most informative and valuable input, and to Scott for so skillfully sizing down my photo containing the hallmarks. Based on the information provided, I am hopefully correct in understanding that the "251" ID number contained in the supplier's mark is what would identify the maker in Florence, Italy. What would be the best way to find out that information; would Tardy contain it? IP: Logged |

"215 FI" is the registry number of FAF (Fabbrica Argenteria Fiorentina) in Florence, Italy. They were in business until May, 1999 when they apparently closed and delared their maker's punches to be missing. (This according to a Italian Chamber of Commerce Bulletin of 26 May 1999.) IP: Logged |
