Have flogged my Tardy, but it still won't divulge the source of these hallmarks:

Seems to me they are French, but I can't identify them. What am I missing here?

TIA!!!

I'm 95% sure that the crowned G is the mark for Guimaraes, Portugal used in the mid-19th century. (A very similar mark is on page 333 of my copy of Tardy - infernal, frustrating Tardy.) I'd try to get hold of a copy of "Marcas de contrastes e ourives portugueses" by Manuel Gonçalves Vidal and Fernando Moitinho de Almeida; vol. 1 has pretty much an exhaustive list of pre-1887 Portuguese marks.

Thanks for your feedback, blakstone. I had noticed the Portuguese marks in Tardy, but the "crown" didn't seem to match very well. Perhaps a better match is in the text you mention, but it doesn't sound like it's one that's available from the local library! I guess I'll have to try a lend request (which, unfortunately, seems to disappear into the void). Thanks again!

I am sorry but the 5% wins. I can't make out all the marks, perhaps you should send them to me by email. In any case the Lorraine cross is a give away. The piece is certainly Saint-Omer, dep. of Lille, France. If I had to guess, I would say 1785. Could you tell me what the initials of the maker's mark are?

Thanks, larbarbedor! Now I see the correct mark on p.155 of Tardy, a day late and a dollar short! The pic was from a long distance transaction. Without a firm attribution, I let someone else scoop it up. Oh, well, sometimes chicken, sometimes feathers! Add another item to the "one that got away" list.

I stand corrected. Mea Culpa.
