Wondered if anyone has any reference to maker - stamped on side of spoons is Ster-Silv and W Germany and small almost heatshaped stamp with three dots inside Also a small sugar spoon in a different rose pattern stamped on back 835 and mark of initial W inside a Capital C. Thanks in advance for any information! IP: Logged |

It's difficult to say without a picture but it could be that the second one (W inside C) is Widmann in Pforzheim, a company that has existed since the 1st quarter of the 20th century. Sorry, can't tell you any more. IP: Logged |

Just checked the Christoph Widmann site and yes the w inside C is the same - rose pattern of this spoon is different to current reproductions offered (taller rosebud almost like a thistle pattern) - sorry can't post photos of the other yet as my ISP doesn't support web space. This pattern - known as Hildesheimer Rose - was manufactured by a number of German companies, including Widmann (which is still in business). It was - and remains - wildly popular in Germany. The name comes from an allegedly thousand year old rose bush at Hildesheim Cathedral. The legend is that King Louis the Pious held a sacrifice for the Virgin Mary in a forest but, afterwards, the church implements borrowed for the service were missing. After a search, the items were found irretrievably entangled in a rose bush. Seeing this as a sign from the Blessed Mother, King Louis ordered a chapel built on the spot. On this site was later built Hildesheim Cathedral, where the rose bush still stands. The tree was burned and presumed destroyed during fire bombing in WWII, but it miraculously bloomed the following summer and continues to do so, being universally acknowledged as the oldest rose bush in the world.
