Can you post a photo of the marks? Is the head male or female, front or in profile,an old man with a beard, a woman with a helmet etc. There are several possibilities! Meanwhile, see a selection of can be at: French marks found IP: Logged |

As has been said, no precise identification is possible without a photograph or good illustration. That being said, I'd venture a guess that what you have is the "Dianakopf", or Diana's head, used in Austria between 1866 and 1922. In a hexagon, with the number 2 behind her head, this stood for the 2nd silver standard of .900. The letter before her face indicated the assay office and therefore (usually) the city of manufacture. The problem is, there was no assay office with the letter "I" (which is the only thing I can think the 1 might be) during the period. Most common is "A", for the Vienna office, then "C" for the Prague office. Is the mark very clear? Could the "1" be some other letter? "SF" is undoubtedly the maker's mark - and could possibly be identified if the assay office is pinned down - and the 2643 probably a model number. IP: Logged |

Wyler lists several male heads withing hexagons facing right and with numbers on one or both sides as French 19th c. hallmarks, but as the previous responder notes, Austrian makers also used a similar mark. IP: Logged |
