Hi again, I picked up this ladle recently which I presume is a presentation ladle, perhaps for a wedding as there is an inscription P.R.L &Y.Y. 1882. The makers mark is AFS, there is another mark with what looks like the symbol delta, a dot, a "3" and the date "1882" below it. Next to this is sn "84" and then what looks like a boat or building. Any ideas? PS-Do you have any recommendations of a book which is good for continental?

The marks are Russian, but from the area constituting the modern country of Latvia, which was under Russian control in the 19th century. The city mark is for Riga, and the 1882 Assayer's mark (not "delta - 3", but the cyrillic letters transliterating to "LZ") is that of Ludwig Christian Zug, working 1856-1884. I checked M.M. Postnika-Losseva's "Silver & Jewelry of the 15th-20th Centuries: Territories of the USSR" - the standard reference for Russian silver marks - and the maker "AFS" is listed there, but alas not identified by name. Hope this helps! [This message has been edited by blakstone (edited 11-19-2004).] IP: Logged |

Regarding your inquiry as to a good book on continental hallmarks, "International Hallmarks On Silver Collected By Tardy" is probably the best overall bet. It is available in paperback for about $20 US or so. In the case of your example, it would lead you to Russia and the period, but is not detailed enough to identify Latvia or the maker. For detailed identification of continental marks, it's hard to beat "Silver Salon Forum Continental Hallmark Identifications By Blakstone"! IP: Logged |
