I don't usually fool with anything other than American silver, but I like to think that I am aware of the proper avenues for finding answers about mystery markings from foreign countries. I guess this is what I get for feeling that way. This photograph was sent to me in the hope that I might be able to figure out where it's from. I've checked Tardy, and though I found some similar markings, I was not able to definitively identify the stamps on this piece. Can anyone help?

The sheer number of marks here - far too many to be legitimate - tell me that these are some of the notorious pseudo-marks used by the silversmiths of Hanau, Germany. Fortunately, there are enough of them that they may be positively identified as those of Gebrüder Dingeldein [Dingeldein Brothers] of Hanau. Owned by O. & N. Dingeldein, they were listed as early as 1870 and as late as 1925. They, as did most of the Hanau silversmiths, specialized in pieces in antique and historical styles. A fascinating 2 part article on Hanau "Historical" silver may be found here: Part 1: The Antique Silver Industry of Hanau Part 2: The Antique Silver Industry of Hanau Hope this helps!

That is definitely a help. Thanks. The article mentions the complete catalogue of Hanau marks compiled by Scheffler. It would be interesting to see, but of course, it looks to be all in German. However, I certainly feel more enlightened knowing that these marks exist and that there is a volume available to identify them. IP: Logged |
