I bought this spoon in Tartou Estonia. I believe it was made in Tallinn, but have not been able to date it or identify the maker. Help? Thanks and Happy New Year, Tom

I do not know much about silver but the word "KOPF" on your spoon means "HEAD" in German. I am afraid I do not know the other marks, Hopefully someone will be able to help you on this matter. IP: Logged |

Tallinn is correct, and the maker is Joseph Kopf, working 1896-1930. I can't really make out the hallmark on the left, but I'm pretty sure it is that used during Estonia's brief period of independence from the Soviet Union, 1920-1939. At the time, Estonia enforced a simplified system of hallmarking, with all silver and gold requiring only the Estonian state mark (a leopard passant regardant, facing left, in an oval), the fineness in thousandths, and the maker's mark. Here is good photo of the Estonian 1920-1939 mark (the maker here is Richard Lange, working Tallinn, 1903-1938)
If this is your mark, then your spoon can be dated squarely to the 1920s. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |

Bingo! It is amazing how an unclear mark becomes clear when you have an example to compare it to!The mark in the oval is indeed a Leopard. Thanks so much and Happy New Year, IP: Logged |
