I have narrowed the date of this ladle to 1908-17, but am not sure of where it was made or by whom. I got it in Tibillisi. It is very hard to photograph the hallmark, which is on the inside curve of the ladle. The Greek letter to the left of the women's head on the kokoshnik mark is Delta (Where can I get a list of regions corresponding to the Greek letters?). The Cyrillic letters are "HBM". Also, I notice that many of my Russian pieces are very rustic. The bowls look almost hand-hammered. Is this characteristic of Russian silver? I have not noticed it on pieces from elsewhere. It makes each one unique, though, and more fun to collect.
PS Would a Russian silver forum be a good idea? IP: Logged |

Sorry I can't be of much help here, but I can tell you that "delta" was the mark for the Moscow assay office 1908-1926, and that "NVM" (the Cyrillic transliteration of "HBM") is listed as unidentified in Postnika-Losseva, though she does mention that a cigarette case by him is in the State Historical Museum in Moscow. He was working "after 1908". As for the rustic looking pieces, this is called the "Muscovite" style, and it was Russia's version of the historical revival movements that were so popular in Europe in the 2nd half of the 19th century. It was an homage to old 18th & earlier Russian styles, and it stood in great contrast to the much more delicate, "European" looking pieces being made in St. Petersburg for the western market (and the western taste of the doomed Imperial Court.) Finally, Postnika-Losseva's book (which I have mentioned several times) has a list of all (well, nearly all - she left out Warsaw) the Greek letter codes of the 1908-1926 period. Unfortunately, it's only available in Russian, but, as I have found, a handful of words and a good Russian dictionary will take you a long way. It isn't cheap - about $120 - last time I looked, and it might not even be in print any more. (The last edition was 1995.) I did see a copy of it for sale a week or two ago on (ahem) a popular public auction site. I'm happy to use my copy to answer any and all queries, though. There don't seem to be that many, so I think it's fine to just keep them all here on the Continental board - no sense in getting too specific here. IP: Logged |
