This Russian teaspoon was made in 1875, but the kokoshnik mark was cut off during stamping, so I am having a hard time figuring out where it was made. Based on what little I can see of the town mark, my best guess is Minsk or Orgeev. Also, my sources don't list a maker whose initials are Cyrillic "CAC" (SAS). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Well, I've exhausted my references and can't find a maker CAC/SAS. If the mark is either Minsk or Orgeyev, then this isn't too surprising, since they were both very small provincial offices and are consequently not very well-researched. Being so small, though, items from these offices are pretty rare, and my gut feeling looking at the spoon is "Moscow". (It is worth noting, too, that most items identified as from Minsk are actually from Warsaw, whose assay mark was indistigushable from it.) Moreover, a handful of cities - notably St. Petersburg and Warsaw - had at least some maker's marks in the Latin alphabet, so the mark might even actually be CAC, not SAS. (As I say, I could find neither listed.) Would a clearer photo of the mark to the right of the "1873" be possible? I have occasionally seen narrow spoons like this where the Assay Master's/Date mark was struck twice so that both the top (assayer's initials) and bottom (date) were visible. Is it possible that this is the case here? Frankly, it doesn't seem too likely, but identifying the mark on the right is the only option I see at this point. I am afraid a clear picture would not help. There is no overstrike, just half a mark. Since I bought it in Tallinn, Warsaw is an intriguing possibility. I only say this because the silver I bought in Georgia tended to be from Moscow. I guess this is a true mystery piece. Thanks, IP: Logged |
