Hi: I'm new to the Forum; everyone surely seems helpful. We buy large estates and found this wonderful (and heavy) old five piece silver set. I think it is British, but have been through every reference I have and no i.d. so far. I only need any start to the maker or city, etc.; I will try to do the rest. It is original "Sheffield" silver I believe, as it weighs a ton! Here is a photo of the hall mark from the large under tray:
Thanks for any clues! Robert2 IP: Logged |

What, if I may ask, is your purpose in asking? IP: Logged |

Hi: I'm going to spend a whole month polishing it up to give to my sister for a birthday gift, and I would love to be able to attach a nice little note with the information. I have several reference books on American silver and plate flatware, but the "starting point" I need to at least know the country of origin so far has eluded me. I hope you can help. See Rainwater: Birmingham Silver Company of Yatesville CT. Don't over-polish it. IP: Logged |

WEV: Thanks so much! We have that reference in one of our local library branches; I'll get to it yet today. Thanks, too, for the advice on over-polishing, I have only polished the hall mark, and will take particular care with the rest. When I get it all finished I'll post a photo of the whole set. It is lovely with just enough but not too much of a pattern and design. Thanks again! Robert2 IP: Logged |
