[01-2136] This is the only other piece that I retrieved from the flood. See English Silver Tankard thread. It looks like a tumbler. It is 4 inches tall. The mouth is also 4 inches wide. There is a cobalt blue glass liner. There are two hallmarks and engraved initial H and last name, Lnoq (?) My questions are:

Both the style of the piece and the marks are absolutely consistent with an "Historical" style piece made in Hanau, Germany in the first quarter of the 20th Century. The photograph of the marks is very dark, but I'm fairly sure they are those used by Gebrüder Dingeldein [Dingeldein Brothers] of Hanau, fl. 1870 - after 1925. The "H Lnoq?" looks like an inventory mark. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |

Thank you for your response. When you write "historical style piece", do you mean it was made to look as if it came from an earlier time? IP: Logged |

Go to this thread Unknown marks for more information. You can also use the search function at the top of the current thread to search for "Hanau" in other discussions of Hanau silversmiths in this General Forum. IP: Logged |

Yes, that's exactly what it means, and the link(s) swarter has provided should prove illuminating. Thanks, too, wev, for the brightened photo. I retract my previous attribution. Based on the adjusted photo, I'm 95% sure that the marks are those used by Storck & Sinsheimer of Hanau. The company was founded in 1874 and was still in business in 1926. Scheffler's Goldschmiede Hessens does not list any pseudo marks for them, but I have made a study of these marks for some time and added several to Scheffler's list, including the two here which, as I say, I have attributed with relative certainty to Storck & Sinsheimer. (Sorting these out is a daunting task, but fun detective work!). It is worth noting, too, that Scheffler does record a "Jardinère mit Glaseinsatz, Neu-Empire, dat. 1904 [Jardinère with Glass Insert, Empire Revival, dated 1904]" by S&S sold at auction in 1975. Very much the same idea as your piece! IP: Logged |

Thank you Blakstone, wev, and swarter. I read the forum search and articles. It seems the silversmiths from Hanau make your research much more complicated! It bothers me that I cannot decipher what shape the mark on the right is even as I hold it in my hand. I gently used a silver cream over the marks to see if it would help but it didn't. Maybe what I was calling a signature is actually, H L no 8. IP: Logged |

I suspect the scratched letters and numbers are an inventory number from one a previous owner of the tumbler... for tracking purposes if it got stolen. The scratches look relatively new. Seems a bit barbaric and I have seen it done before. Fred IP: Logged |
