I recently purchased a set of silver (84)Sabbath Candlesticks in London that have the following marks: SZYLDBERG I.S. over 1865 and the Polish EAGLE followed by what appears to be a "scale of justice or jewelers scale" With the letters R and what looks like an inverted U which I take to be Cyrllic. From the net I found a silversmith named R.Hersz Szyldberg of that era with works in the Krakow Museum. Can anyone add to this info, bio of the smith or explain the markings? Thanks in advance. I could not get a readable picture of the markings with my camera. Murray

Any chance of posting a photo? It is hard to picture what you describe with sufficient clarity to hazzard more than a guess. Tom IP: Logged |

R. Hersz Szyldberg is correct; he was working in Warsaw at least between 1864 and 1872. The scales are his trademark; Warsaw silversmiths were unusual in that in addition to their name and/or initials, they also generally applied a trademark such as this to their wares. "I.S. over 1865" is the assayer's mark for the year 1865: that of Josef Sosnkowski, who was an assayer at the Warsaw office 1852-1853 and chief assayer there 1860-1896. He used the initals "IS" 1852-1853 and 1860-1869; "IC" in 1869, and "OC" 1870-1896 (the latter two being Cyrillic.) The "R" and inverted "U" is a puzzle, since our Latin "R" doesn't occur in Cyrillic (though the Cyrillic "Yu" looks like the Latin "R" in mirror image.) This mark I'd have to see to decipher.
