This is a long shot, but I thought maybe someone might have seen something like this before. It is a Louis XIV coin c. 1660(about the size of a nickel) fastened to a piece of stone (sandstone?). It is about a century too early for the fall of the Bastille. The answer would be appreciated, humor allowed, but keep it clean. IP: Logged |

Humour fails me this evening, but I can say that the coin is Louis XIII, not Louis XIV. Hard to say if the mounting is contemporary with the coin. IP: Logged |

Sorry I am not an expert on coins, but the last "I" is tarnished as it is too close to the prong. It is "XIIII" or the "14th". The French (as the Romans) did not follow the rules we were taught in grammar school. Besides unless Louis the XIV was very forgiving (he was not) he might have been offended by his predecessor interloping into his reign by 17 years. IP: Logged |

Would never mean to offend the ghost of Louis XIV! Goes to show how important it is to give complete information about marks on these forums. There are many examples of Louis XIV demi écu silver coins with XIV, just as there are coins with XIIII, some of the latter being overstruck. So as you point out, Roman numerals were not standardized at that time, which has nothing to do with the level of education of today’s observers. You might get more useful feedback to your question on a numismatics board. IP: Logged |

I'd like to keep on the good side of the Guidelines, so won't make a specific recommendation. However if you do a google search with the terms "coin" and "talk," you might find an organization that will be useful in your research. Let us know if you find an answer to your query. IP: Logged |

I posted the piece on a coin site, and didn't learn much, except that it was minted in Lyon. I guess it is time to tell the true story. The stone descended in my family, it was given by my 7 x great grandfather to my 6 x great grandfather. The instructions written in French read: if you see this man take off cover (keep it, as it is valuable) then sling ( the word means using a sling or sling shot) at him, then run like hell. Luckily it was not used, since both it and my ancestor's genes descended intact. IP: Logged |

What a great story! How wonderful it would be to understand the meaning behind such an item and note. "money and protection" all in one single item. Perhaps it was a good luck charm to provide prosperity and protection for a loved one. Thanks for sharing. Fred IP: Logged |

I second Freds sentiments. Do you know who "this man" was? IP: Logged |

I was just joking. "This man" was Louis XIV. At that time my family was far from revolutionary. IP: Logged |

Labarbedor, I am shocked! Were you kidding about the story of the note? Tsk Tsk! I was ready to make several hundred of these with coins of certain political faces for sale to the public.... "What is this world comming to when we cannot trust the words uttered by a man of Labarbedors standing".... This is a great forum filled with men and women of knowledge and humor. What a great combination. Fred [This message has been edited by FredZ (edited 02-22-2005).] IP: Logged |
