Chris is traveling but asked me if I knew the following marks. I did a quick look in Tardy's but nothing I saw seemed like a good match. I thought I would make this a post. Any ideas? I think Chris will be back in a few days and then able to answer any additional questions. IP: Logged |

Just the size and excessive number of the marks make me think Dutch or Hanau fantasy/pseudo marks. Cheryl ;o) IP: Logged |

I was thinking the same thing, Cheryl. A thread that discuss the topic: I don't have the handy Scheffler text for identifying all of these to verify it, but the three-masted ship looks awfully similar to the one shown in the first thread above. IP: Logged |

Spot on. At least five of these marks are recorded: the ship, the lion, the "13", the "N-FR-S" [in imitation of the Austrian census mark of 1809-1810] and (the dead giveaway) the stylized "n". That's more than enough to conclusively identify the item as by Ludwig Neresheimer of Hanau, fl. 1890-after 1935. The stylized "n" (which itself is in imitation of the old Rostock guild mark) was Neresheimer's registered trademark. The ship here is remarkably similar to that used by Dingledein in the referenced thread, but there are some subtle differences. This is the sort of thing that makes Hanau silver maddening for many, but hours of delightful fun for obsessives like me. IP: Logged |
