Newark has in its collection a Polish Torah Crown by I. Perlman (whom I call Itzhak Perlman without knowing his name). The congregation was small one in Newark (which had a huge Jewish population, mostly Reform or Conservative; this was an Orthodox schul). Other Torah crowns of very similar design are known from Poland, and other things by this mysterious Perlman are known, these being in the Jewish Museum collection and illustrated in Vivian Mann's book CROWNING GLORY. Does anyone have anything on Mr. Perlman? IP: Logged |

Well, one source says - with no evidence - that he worked in Moscow in the late 19th century, but I doubt this, since he is not listed in Postnika-Lovessa. Do we have anything else to go on? Date? (It is my experience that Judaica is often difficult to date stylistically, since it was generally rooted in tradition and not, as a rule, subject to faddishness.) Any other marks? (City or Guild marks? Fineness?) Do we know what part of Poland? (Assuming it is more than 80 years old, the proper places to be looking would be Russian, German or Austrian references.) IP: Logged |

Perhaps a museum of Judaica could help with the id. Spirtus Institute here in Chicago has quite a collection of Torahs and related artifacts. They also have a web page. I believe there is a museum, foundation, or something in London devoted to restoring Torahs collected by the Nazis for their proposed museum to "extinct" races when they finished the "final solution." They now provide the Torahs to synagogues around the world. I learend of this project taking students to a local synagogue as part of a course I teach. I don't have any more details. Good luck, IP: Logged |
