I got this spoon in Sofia last week. The hallmark is a crown in a circle beneath which is the letter “K” and three hash marks (Roman numerals?). The maker’s mark is “IP” or “IF”. Bulgaria gained de facto independence from Turkey in the 1876 Russo-Turkish War (confirmed by the Congress of Berlin in 1878) and became a monarchy. It achieved full independence following the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913. This background and the crown suggest that the spoon was made between 1876 and 1945, when the country became Communist. Does anyone have more information on the maker or a more precise date? Thanks,

I can help a little. The crown mark is Romanian; the three notches are indeed Roman numerals and indicate the 3rd silver standard of .750 (as does the circular outline). The mark in this form - with the hatches at the bottom - was used from 26 Sep 1926 (after the 1918-1920 annexation of Transylvania and other provinces) until the introduction of new marks by Carol II on 13 Dec 1937. The K, I think, must be an indication of a particular assay office (the letter A has also been reported) but I do not have a list of them. Hope this helps! Wow, thanks for the detailed response. If the the "K" does represent an assay office, could it be "Konnigsberg," the old name for Brasov in Transylvannia? Tom IP: Logged |

Well, of course that's possible, but it's equally likely that the letters are simply random - A, B, C, etc. - and have no relation to the cities they represent. IP: Logged |
