I have two spoons with somewhat unusual hallmarks. I think they are German or Austrian because they were acquired in Frankfurt in the late 19th or early 20th century. They also have the loth mark 13 but no other marks. They are fiddle back spoons. Does anyone know if German or Austrian Silver was ever marked only with the loth number? If so, when was this done?

Some 19th century German (and Polish) silver was indeed marked only with the löthige; Austrian silver, in my experience, was more closely regulated. Spoons so marked generally date between 1865 or so (the end of most of the guilds) and 1886 (the countrywide introduction of the familiar "crown & moon" reichsmark), but such pieces can be earlier, often from smaller cities which which had no guild. The fiddle style was around in the 18th century, but it was at its most popular (in Germany, anyway) circa 1830 - 1880. So, either way, 3rd quarter 19th C. is a good guess.

Hope this helps!
