[07-0292] Hi folks, I have a really nice 2 handled cup (oval dish) that has some 4 stamped marks on the bottom. The two on the left are 18th century Rotterdam (Holland) according to Tardy, the third mark is the makers mark (?,) and the fourth mark ('N' in a shaped cartouche) is the date mark. The way the piece is soldered together leads me to believe that it is c. 1740's on.. My problem is that the Dutch cities used letters in cycles to indicate the year a piece was made, similar to the British, and I do not have a book that has that information in it. What I would like first, is the name of a book that would help me with drawings of the year letters and their cartouches for the dutch cities to the early 1800's.. Secondly, I could use some help on this date letter. As for the maker, Yes!, I would love to acquire a book that showed Dutch makers marks, or at least the name of the best book around, so I may search after it. Respectfully,

I can't help with the maker, but the date letter "n" here is definitely not that of either the 1735-1758 or the 1783-1807 Rotterdam cycle of letters, so that leaves either 1723 or 1771. The city & fineness mark are consistent with mid-18th Century, so I expect 1771 is the correct date. Hope this helps! IP: Logged |

Hi there Blakstone, and much thanks. What book did you get this information from? I seem to be getting more than my share of Dutch silver, and while I can handle the later dates, anything prior to 1807 is just guesswork. Thanks for your help. Respectfully, Marc Cutcher IP: Logged |
