Here's a great fish knife, measuring just over a foot in length. The mark seems German, but it is impossible to discern the name next to it. (It may be Hermann?) Any thoughts?

The town mark is 19th-century Hamburg; search for "Hamburg" in these forums and you will find a discussion from a few months back about the rather complicated date letter system for Hamburg silver.

The letter in the arch of the castle is "F".

From the previous post:

"The town mark with the tree towers is Hamburg and the letter F stands for the essayer's period of Johann Hinrich Jacob Wienicke from 1857 up to the 1870s."

Great stuff! I suppose the maker will remain lost in time/rubbed out...

The maker's mark is "HEINEMANN", for Ludwig Heinemann of Hamburg. The assayer Weinecke was working 1857-1865, so your very nice fish slice can be dated to within those 8 years. (The Hamburg guild was abolished in 1865.)

Hope this helps!

Blakstone, you are quite remarkable. How you got HEINEMANN from my bad picture of this very worn mark calls to mind supernatural powers. But if I look under a high power lupe it does seem to fit. Thanks so much.
