On the base of a 190gram box by Whiting Mfg Co., number 2691 is lightly raised - "Si jamais ta gâitė fuyait ŕ tire d’aile Si tes amis trompeux se dėtournaient de toi Songe qu’il en est un dont le coeur est fidčle. Aime moi!" Translated as - If your cheerfulness ever flew away at full speed If your false friends abandoned you Bear in mind that there is one whose heart is true Love me! On the lid is the opening line to an unidentified tune and what appears to be the composer's name but too light to be readable. I assume it was part of a lady's toilet set, possibly given by an admirer who had the text put on the base as few would look on there for a message. Any information on this piece including possible dating will be appreciated. Many thanks. IP: Logged |

ozfred, I have found that the Whiting pattern numbers are generally sequential within certain categories. It can get a little more complicated, but without seeing a photo of this box I would say that it probably dates to the 1880s or 1890s. It would help if you could post a picture. Dear Richard, Thank you for your reply. My lack of expertise is the reason for not posting pics. The dimensions of the rounded corner container are 140x80x20mm. Not that that information is of much assistance but thanks, anyway. IP: Logged |
