Hello all

Just recently I picked up this nice little German tray - its pre 1884, as it has the identifiable "angel" of Munchen (Munich). However, a couple of things have me stumped:

1) I've looked and looked, but I can't seem to see any "date numerals", which I thought started in the 18th century. However, the piece is not that old I do not think. Help? Does anyone know when they started being used

2) I don't know who the maker is - I now (hopefully!) attach a photo taken by my camera on macro through a 20x loupe - the hallmarks themselves are tiny.

Does anyone recognize the mark?

TIA for your time

Regards

Waylander

Not an angel, but a splayed eagle: the trademark of Peter Bruckmann & Söhne of Heilbronn. To the left of the 800 you'll notice the reichsmark of the crown & moon (though the moon is quite faded) dating your piece to post-1888 (when the law of 1884 went into effect) after all.

The firm was founded in 1805 by Georg Peter Bruckmann. Under his grandson, Peter, the firm became Germany’s largest silver supplier at the turn of the century; Peter later became the first chairman of the Deutscher Werkbund. The firm trained its own deisgners, silversmiths, chasers and engravers. It closed in 1973.

Any further narrowing down the date would have to be done on stylistic grounds, though by the mark alone I'm guessing 1930s. Any chance of a photo of the tray?

PS: To answer your question, Munich used date numbers from 1742 until the guild closed in 1868.

Thanks Blakstone. I did have my doubts (mainly due to the design of the piece, which cries 20th century to me). I will post a photo of the whole piece shortly for your judgment.
