Among a group of silver pieces from my aunt who passed away, I received two wonderful, silver(?) butter pats. They are not marked "Sterling". They have hand engraved designs of flowers and animals on the borders. I am interested in knowing if they are silver plated, who might have made them and how old they are? I love them and I want to know as much as I can learn about them. Thanks!

Your itms are Mexican and marked with the asseyor mark of Buitron. The probability is that it is a forgery of an early Spanish colonial piece. These marks are some of the most common forged marks. I will check my reference books and give you a confirmation. The BTON was the mark for Buitron the Chief Assayer. The M with an o above it was used as a quality mark. The last mark was of an eagle to indicate that taxes had been paid on the item. Fred

Fred, thank you! How interesting! I can't wait to hear what your further research reveals. What period would they be from if they were authentic? I'm not familiar with Mexican silver of that age. Thanks again! Fawn IP: Logged |

The marks are forgeries of Chief Assayer Cayetano Buitron. The authentic marks have letters with serifs on both the BTON and the M. and the eagle tax mark faces the opposite way of the mark on your small plates. I suspect these were made during the first half of the 20th Century. They are probably made of silver and not plated. I have owned examples of these and a few other forged silver items with similar marks. Your small plates are charming examples of forged colonial silver. Examples of authentic and forged marks are documented in "Spanish Colonial Silver" by Leona Davis Boylan. Fred IP: Logged |

Scott, Prompted by your actions I searched for Jaimelee1 on ebay and found the two dishes she had "inherited from her aunt" at auction. Guess she did not "love" them enough to keep them. The new format is a good idea. Fred IP: Logged |
