[26-0051] Greetings All. Can anyone help in identifying the marks on this key? I have been told it is not English, French or Australian. I have had it for 30 years but know little of silver identification. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I hope the images are displayed properly. Thank you kindly.

Well, I can't say what it's the key to (it may be nore more than a simple charm - "key to my heart" sort of thing), but I've definitely seen that whacky little critter mark before. I'm convinced it's Scandinavian, though I hover between Norwegian and Danish. Here, though, the "G.Ph." mark appears to be that of Grethe Phillipsen of Copenhagen, used 1968-1975. I expect someone with better knowledge of Scandinavian jewelry & silver can help you more. IP: Logged |

Thank you most kindly. This is more information than I had hoped to obtain. I will look into it further using your info as reference. IP: Logged |

Believe these Scandinavian keys are replicas of the household keys given to Viking women upon their marriage. They supposedly wore, hanging from their waist, the keys to the buildings and food chests as symbols of their authority and responsibility for the household. Have also seen reference to Christian Vikings using similar keys as an amulet to ensure that they could open St. Peter's gate to heaven. Blakstone, I've also run across that critter before (woohoo, roadkill!)- sorry, getting punchy, couldn't resist. Think it might be used on items from a museum gift shop? Like the marks on pieces from Colonial Williamsburg, etc.? Cheryl ; IP: Logged |
