Good morning,

I am trying to identify a small sterling ladle. I cannot read the Mark, even with a magnifying glass. For years I thought this was French, however, recently a friend said she thought it was Hungarian.

These are the best pictures I have to offer, done on my scanner since I do not have a digital camera.

Is this an ice scoop?

Thank you for any information you can offer.

I have a number of these. I believe it is a sugar sifter, judging by what appear to be holes. I cannot make out the hallmarks from the photo. An ordinary magnifying glass won't work. A jewler or anitque dealer should have something more powerful. I picked up what is called a cloth tester, orignally designed for counting the linen threads in fine paper or cloth. Opticians can order them.

Anyway, if you can describe the marks, once you get a clearer look, some one may be able to make sense of them.

Actually, I can't tell if the spoon has perforations. If not, it might be a berry spoon.

How large is this spoon? Spoons of diferent sizes often have different functions.

It looks like a French sugar sifter. I think I can make out a lozenge shaped maker's mark. If you can describe what is inside, we can date it.

Thank you, I have a slightly larger magnifying glass and I believe I have identified one of the Marks, the one that stands alone, I will enclose the picture.

The spoon is slightly less than 8" in length, the bowl is 2 & 1/4" across, 2 & 1/2 in length & by my estimate 1 & 1/2" deep & is perforated.

If this is no help, I will buy a better magnifier late next week (Mardi Gras here & we're leaving town).

That is the large guarantee mark for Paris 1819-38. The mark you need to describe is the one in the lozenge.

In between initials there is usually a symbol, without it one can't identify the maker. Maybe you can find someone with a good digital camera.
