[26-0157] Just purchased a lovely set of 10 Polish teaspoons. I'm familiar with the Warsaw mark (.800 standard), but I'm unsure of the "MP" mark. Is it a maker? Any response will be appreciated! Thanks!

Yes, MP is the maker or retailer, Unfortunately I have no Polish name lists of silversmiths or retailers. But the hallmark was in use since August 9th 1920 until April 11th 1947 Hope that helps IP: Logged |

"MP" is Mojzesz Princenthal, working in Warsaw during the first half of the 20th Century. He was definitely a manufacturer; his mark is sometimes accompanied by his trademark of a galloping horse. It is also sometimes seen alongside a retailer's name: M. Zybert, A. Bauminger and D.N. Krejnes have all been recorded. The truncated oval mark on your piece was used for large (over 10 grams) items of 3rd standard (.800) silver. It was created by a law of 16 Jul 1920 and officially began use in Warsaw on 1 Sep 1920, when the assay office there was opened by the new Polish government. Polish hallmarks were extensively revised in a decree of 31 Jul 1931, which became effective on 1 Jan 1932, and it is my understanding that this particular mark ceased usage then. A similar mark in an oval without the truncated sides - which had previously been used only on items under 10 grams - was thenceforth used on all silver items until the laws were again changed in 1963.
