I have been studying a Tea Caddie my parents own. It is reputed to be old however when I looked at the marks got even more confused. I can only assume it has been repaired at some time. The highly decorated base part has the following marks on the underside which are grouped together but not in a line. A standing Lion facing left with front paws outstretched above this is and within the same "Shield" is a Key. Another "shield" has what appears to be a crab or something with nippers facing forward and only 2 legs facing backwards. Another shield with a bush of some type with 7 fronds. Another Diamond shape with 4 indistinct articles inside it. The neck of the caddie has very clear marks and I believe this may have been added later L.L then a crouching lion facing left with one paw raised, then P then F then an uncrowned Leopards head The cap/ measure of the caddie has a similar lion to above, the letter F,then a shield with a key and something else inside and what looks like a italicized IE. In addition to all this scratched on the base are marks which make me believe it has been sold at auction. The date 1826 although the story goes is that the caddie is supposed to be from 1761. There is also the following 101/BW/- displayed with the 101 above the BW with a line between almost like an equation. Any help very much appreciated. IP: Logged |

Please try to post more detailed photos of the marks - including those on the neck and cap. My first impression is this may be from Hanau, a centre infamous for making (or faking) earlier style pieces in the latter 19th century. The medieval/romantic style images look very typical. IP: Logged |

I am reasonably certain the tea caddy is Dutch. The three center marks on the bottom are psuedo marks. Somewhere often separate from the other marks you will find a single letter inside a circle, if you can find it and post or send a photo, we should be able to date it. IP: Logged |

I believe the second mark from the top is a "10" for 10 lot, a low grade (the lowest?)of silver (10/16 or 62.5%). IP: Logged |
