Please can anyone help in identifying the maker from a small piece of Dutch silver. It is apaperknife 6ins long with a windmill on the top. It has 3 marks plus the maker. The letter M seems to signify 1845 and the number 2 is under the lion. the maker is DZH. Would like to know the maker and the town of origin from the number 2. thanks, silverman1 IP: Logged |

We should really have a photograph (or a good drawing) before attempting to identify marks. However, if the marks are Dutch, and if the number 2 is within the lion punch, then it is safe to say that it is a quality mark for second quality silver (.835) and not a town mark. IP: Logged |

Try scanning in a drawing. Is there a duty mark (Perseus head) on the piece? If so there should be letter mark within the punch, indicating the assay office). Good luck, IP: Logged |

There is a DZH listed in Maker's Mark of Dutch Gold & Silversmiths 1814-1963, Vol 1.(ISBN 90 1205247 5) as Droog, Zegwaart & van Herwaarde of Harlem, active 1947-1949. A sloping 'M' within a circle was the year mark for 1947. This may be the maker but without a pic, it is an assumption. IP: Logged |
