I have a silver railroad pocket watch that I am trying to date. One of the inner flaps is engraved with RemonYoir - ANCRE LIGNEOROITE - 95 Rubis. The marking looks like it is a pheasant or a peacock in a round edged triangle. I'm assuming it's french from the engraved name. Any idea?

Hi nanaheart57. Please try a search thru your favorite search site for RemonToir watch, (T not Y). Your question should be answered. It is not a watch maker but a type of watch. Remontoir being the French term for stem wind. Hope this helps. Jersey IP: Logged |

I can add that the "pheasant or peacock" you mention sounds suspiciously like the Swiss mark for .800 silver (it's a grouse, actually) and the "rounded triangular" outline is probably that which was used 1883-1934 - but a photo would be needed to make a positive identification. IP: Logged |

Also, you are mis-reading "ANCRE LIGNEOROITE" That would be "Ancre Ligne Droit" which tells you the type of escapement. And the 95 RUBIS is inaccurate as well. RUBIS translates as rubies or jewels which aren't really rubies or jewels but bits of artificial corundum which are set into the movement at the friction points to keep it from wearing out too quickly. No watch would have 95 of them - there is only room for 21 that would do any good, though some makers increased that 23 or 25 jewels with some relatively non-functional ones just to say they had more to sell their watches. A more typical number would be 15. IP: Logged |
