The first two side by side characters on top reads from right to left are name of city. It reads "Tian-Jin" which located a short distance S.E. of Beijing. It was an important 19 C. international trading seaport at northern China. The rest of characters do not have any particular meaning in terms of calendar years or silver related. I don't know how anyone know about which calendar year from which it was produced other than guessing. At the time before 20 C., the Chinese calendar year are marked not by numerical numbers. Instead, they were marked first by emperor's official name (usually two characters), and follow up by the two characters represent the year.(total 60 and cyclic). A lot of other type of antiques such as ceramic, painting, and carving, You will see such calendar marking in the form of hand writing or seal. I don't see any such characters on this piece of silver will represent that. Here are what I can put in translation. From top to bottom, there are four groups:
  1. The first group. other than the city's name I already mentioned. The other two characters are "thing" or "goods" and "China"
  2. The second group of only one character means "thick" or "thickness"
  3. The third group of two characters is interesting. It means the line marking (finger prints??) on the "foot"
  4. The last single character at bottom means "good ethic". It could be part of character used in a person's name.

I hope this helps
