I have a piece of French silverware that I always thought to be solid silver as it is hallmarked. However, I am now told that it is silver plate. The hallmark bears the inscription 'No 1' and I can't idenity this from any of the hallmarks on the web sites. It certainly isn't a picture of Minerva. Why hallmark silver plate? Can any please help me? IP: Logged |

There is not much anyone can do to help you without a picture or very detailed description of the marks. The mark silver plate for the same reason they mark solid silver: to identify the maker, sometimes the quality of plate, sometimes the area, sometimes the age. IP: Logged |

I am sorry, I don't have a digital camera or I would send a picture. The other marks are not clear, just the 'No 1'. I was told when I bought it ages ago that No 1 was the French Hallmark for silver and I don't know any different!! Its just lately I have been curious about it and can't trace the hallmark as being French Silver. But thanks for your help. I never realised that they hallmarked plate, so I have learned something today! IP: Logged |

A bit simply put: French solid silver has at least an maker's mark which is diamond shaped and a 'Minerve' which you seem to know about. French silverplated ware has a maker's mark that is square. It contains the maker's identifier along with a quality indicator: a 'I' or a 'II'. IP: Logged |
