Greetings, I have a Russian bracelet that I know nothing about. If someone out there knows the maker and a guess on the age it would be appreciated. My wife wears this regularly and I am just curious about it history. There is a hammer and sickle inside of a star. The Cyrillic letters (Which I do not understand) looks like "IOGK" Thanks........Roger

Well, at the moment your pictures have been removed, so all I have to go on is your verbal description. Firstly, the hammer and sickle quality mark is a post-1958 mark. On such marks, there's often a number next to the star indicating the silver quality (875, for example), and often a tiny letter indicating the city of manufacture. As for the maker's mark... Well, in the Russian Cyrillic alphabet, there is no letter "I" nor "G", per se. There are Cyrillic equivalents, but they look nothing like their Roman counterparts. Most likely, the first character is the Cyrillic "Yu", which looks like a vertical line and a ring standing side by side and connected in the middle. I can't imagine what the second letter is, as I can't remember a single one that resembles a G. Thankfully, the K is indeed a K. But alas, I don't have my copy of "Zolotoe i Serebryanoe Delo XV-XX vv." by my side right now, so you'll likely have to wait for either Sazikov2000 or another expert to reply for more information on the maker. Now that those pictures are up, that letter you thought to be a G is the Cyrillic "B as in boy". As for the first character, I can't see it so clear. Might be "Yu" but might not. Hi IJP. You beat me to it by saying, wait until Sazikov2000 logs on! A silver mine of information on Russian silver - and a real gentleman too! Looking forward to reading his response. Best rgds, TBC IP: Logged |

Already a great start. Under 15X magnification the first letter more closely resembles our letter "1" without the horizontal bar at the bottom. Thanks again......Roger IP: Logged |

I purchased a very similar style bracelet in Tibilisi, Georgia last summer. I was told they are made in Dagistan, the province East of Chechnya. Hope this helps, [This message has been edited by tmockait (edited 04-21-2005).] IP: Logged |

Could that first character perhaps actually be the number "1"? I know that many makers' marks during the sixties and seventies (or thereabouts) began with numbers which corresponded with particular years. IP: Logged |

Thanks Tom for that fantastic bit of info. In regards to the first character I would say that it is in fact a number one, at least it looks as close to a number one as possible. IP: Logged |

The assay mark (in use in this form since May 7th 1958 in the Soviet Union) has left of the star the letter E for the assay office in Eriwan. I hope I can read it right. Right of the star is the silvercontent mark 875/1000. The manufacturer is (as closely as possible in Latin letters): Tbilisskij kombinat po remontu Metaloisdelij (translation as closely as possible): working community for assembling metalgoods in Tbilissi (Tiflis/Georgia). It was manufactured in 1970. tmockait had the right idea! Hope that helps. Sazikov2000 IP: Logged |
