I have a very nice little box that could be anything. It came with a silver thimble in it but I don't think it is a thimble holder, it looks more like a snuff box to me. The top has a beautiful tall ship and there are four images on the sides
It has several markings on the bottom, one doesn't show up much but looks like several x's on top of another image. The first marking at the top looks like a VP in one box but that is just a guess. I know nothing about silver but this looks like Dutch to me maybe early 1800's. Linda IP: Logged |

You have a Dutch sponge box, nothing to do with sewing. The mark you can't read is an Amsterdam mark, but I can't make out the others. You might try cleaning them and try to post them again. These boxes were and are commonly faked, but yours strikes me as period. Believe me with Dutch silver that is a stretch. If this becomes a commercial posting you can email me directly, but I would like to say I am personally not interested in the item. IP: Logged |

As it turns out having seen better photos, the letters are not part of the hallmarks, they could be the owner's initials or something like that. The xxx mark is Amsterdam, but not clear enough to say much beyond that. The heart is the maker's mark of Dirk Goedhart who worked 1782-1814. He was a small worker. I couldn't find the marks in the fake Dutch marks book, which is positive but not definitive. Thus it could be a c. 1800 Dutch sponge box, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. IP: Logged |
